The College of Education Childcare Center project signals urban renewal to a South Side campus and neighborhood. The 28,000 square foot facility is developed as two one-story macro-modules of classrooms, connected by a spine of common spaces, with administrative and support areas. Classrooms accommodate 162 students with additional capacity for after-school children. The existing park-like surroundings are recreated in the building design through a series of shading elements – columns/sticks arranged in the irregular patterns of nature. Outdoor playground is hugged between the two modules of classrooms. The project is LEED NC Silver registered and completion is anticipated in 2018.
